When we're young, it's very easy to confuse the things we want, with absolute need. "If I don't get this, I will absolutely die!" is heard through countless shopping malls. Readers learn a very valuable coping mechanism; that there is a great difference between needs and wants, and a great importance of being driven by needs, not wants.
