The Maid of the Mist
This Native American legend tells of a woman who sails over the Niagara Falls in despair and is saved by the god of the falls. Her tale of sorrow turns into one of heroism and triumph as she returns to save her people from a terrible serpent that has been poisoning their drinking water and causing illness and death among them. With the heightened focus on folklore and legends in the Common Core curriculum, this title is a direct hit. Plus it is a ghost story with a positive ending.
